History

In 1872 Ira Herbert Odell (1842-1928) in partnership with J. Harrison Woods formed a music store and publishing business under the name Woods & Odell. In 1873 Charles W. Thompson (d.1903) joined the partnership which was renamed Woods, Odell, and Thompson. After Woods left the business in 1874 the firm was lastly renamed Thompson & Odell. In addition to publishing music the firm also manufactured musical instruments and imported instruments from Europe.

The firm was incorporated in 1891. Odell retired from the business in 1892. The firm went bankrupt in 1905. Carl Fischer acquired the company's catalog of published music and the Vega Company took over the firm's musical instrument business.

Charles W. Thompson appears to have been one of the partners in the Brooklyn music publisher Sawyer and Thompson in the 1860s.
